Wisdom Teeth Removal: What to Expect and Why It Matters

Wisdom teeth. They sound like a rite of passage. But for most people, they’re more of a nuisance than a milestone. These third molars typically show up in your late teens or early twenties. And for many patients, they cause problems. Crowding. Pain. Infection. Damage to nearby teeth. That’s why wisdom teeth removal is so common, and why it’s often the smartest move for your long-term oral health.

Here’s what you need to know before your appointment.

Wisdom Teeth Removal: What to Expect in Skokie, IL

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Come Out?

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. Some people have enough room in their jaw, and their wisdom teeth come in straight and healthy. But that’s the exception, not the rule.

More often, wisdom teeth are:

  • Impacted: They’re stuck below the gumline, trapped against other teeth or bone.
  • Coming in at an angle: They push against neighboring molars, causing crowding or damage.
  • Only partially erupted: This creates a flap of gum tissue where bacteria can collect, leading to infection and pain.

Even if they don’t hurt right now, problematic wisdom teeth can cause trouble down the road. Cysts, bone loss, and decay on adjacent teeth are all real risks. Removing them early, before problems develop, usually means an easier recovery.

What to Expect During the Procedure

At North Shore Periodontics & Implantology, wisdom tooth removal is a routine procedure. Here’s how it typically goes.

Before the procedure you’ll have a consultation where your dentist examines your mouth and reviews imaging, likely a CBCT scan if we need a detailed view of your tooth roots and nerves. We’ll talk about anesthesia options. For most patients, local anesthesia with sedation is the most comfortable choice. Dr. Hassan is certified in IV sedation, which means you can sleep through the entire procedure if you prefer.

Once you’re comfortable, your periodontist makes a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. Sometimes the tooth is removed in one piece. Other times, it’s gently sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal. You won’t feel pain, just some pressure and movement. The whole thing usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

After the procedure you’ll rest in our recovery area until you’re ready to go home. You’ll need someone to drive you, especially if you had sedation.

What Comes After?

The first 24 hours are the most important. Plan to take it easy:

  • Apply ice packs to your cheeks to keep swelling down.
  • Stick to soft foods like yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes. Avoid anything hot, crunchy, or spicy.
  • Don’t use a straw. Suction can dislodge the blood clot that’s forming in the socket, leading to a painful condition called dry socket.
  • Take medications as prescribed. We’ll recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe something stronger if needed.

Most patients feel back to normal within a few days to a week. Swelling and mild discomfort usually peak around day two or three and then steadily improve.

Why It Matters

Putting off wisdom tooth removal is tempting. But waiting often makes things worse. Impacted teeth can damage neighboring teeth. Infections can spread. Recovery is typically easier when you’re younger and your bone is less dense.

You’re investing in your future oral health. And that’s always worth it.
