Walking into any new dental office can feel a little nerve-wracking. You’re not sure what they’ll find. You’re not sure if it will hurt. And you might be worried someone will tell you that you need a whole lot of work.
At North Shore Perio & Implantology, we want to take that worry off your plate. Here’s exactly what happens during a first perio appointment with us. No surprises. No judgment. Just a clear picture of your gum health and a plan you can understand.

Step One: Getting to Know You
Your first appointment starts with a conversation. One of our team members will sit down with you and go over your health history. We’ll ask about medications, past dental work, and any habits like teeth grinding or smoking. This isn’t just paperwork to us. This information helps us treat you safely and effectively.
We also want to know what brought you in. Are your gums bleeding when you brush? Has a family dentist mentioned you might have gum disease? Or are you simply looking for a second opinion? Whatever your reason, we listen first and talk second.
Step Two: A Gentle, Thorough Exam
After we chat, Dr. Hassan, Dr. Gluck, Dr. Bressman, or Dr. Lucas will perform a complete periodontal exam. Don’t worry; this isn’t painful. Using a small probe, we gently measure the spaces between your teeth and gums. Healthy pockets are usually one to three millimeters deep. Anything deeper may suggest gum disease.
We also check for gum recession, loose teeth, and any areas that bleed easily. Throughout the exam, we explain what we’re seeing in plain English. No confusing dental jargon. Just honest answers.
Step Three: High-Tech Imaging (When Needed)
Depending on what the exam shows, we may take a few X-rays or use our CBCT scanner. That’s a fancy machine that creates a 3D picture of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. It sounds high-tech, because it is. But here’s what it means for you: better accuracy, fewer surprises, and a treatment plan that fits your exact situation.
The CBCT scan is quick and completely painless. You just sit still for about 30 seconds.
Step Four: The “Here’s What We Found” Conversation
This is the most important part of your visit. After the exam, your periodontist sits down with you and lays everything out straight. We’ll tell you:
- Whether you have gum disease and how advanced it is
- What treatment options exist (from non-surgical cleanings to laser therapy)
- What each option costs and how long it takes
- What your insurance may cover
We never pressure you into a decision on the spot. You take this information home, think it over, and let us know when you’re ready.
Step Five: Your Questions, Answered
Before you leave, we make sure you have a chance to ask anything. Can you still eat normally? Will your insurance help? Is sedation an option? Nothing is off limits. We’ve heard it all before, and we’re glad to answer.
You’ve Got This
A first perio appointment isn’t something to fear. It’s simply the first step toward healthier gums, fresher breath, and a smile you feel good about. And you won’t be walking it alone.
